My artistic practice, predominantly focused on watercolor and oil paintings, experienced a monumental shift during the self confinement of the Covid pandemic. The global crisis forced me to reevaluate the meaning of my existence as a human being coexisting on this planet with other life forms. The energy and focus I had used in making paintings quickly dissipated when the country went into shutdown. Physically isolated from the "outside world" and lacking social contact with other humans, I focused inward and retreated to my enclosed backyard for solace. Spending countless hours looking and appreciating my immediate surroundings, I began taking a deeper look at nature, especially the life forms in my backyard. What used to be "just plants” suddenly revealed their numinous beauty to me. As therapy, I “sculpted” the materials found in my yard using ordinary tools in my tool chest, thereby transforming some pieces into anthropomorphic sculptures imbued with special magic.
These new creations deal with the idea of change and the interaction between the art and the observer. These pieces can be hung on a wall or lay flat on a surface. It is tactile and movable allowing the pieces to reveal different moods and compositions.
This artwork is called “Not Just Plants - Green.” It is the second manifestation of a series of three. This piece can be hung on a wall or lay flat on a surface. It is tactile and movable allowing the piece to reveal different shapes and moods. Two species of local palms, remnants of sea life, metal, silk, and bonding agent.
